Forget Plans

Forget plans you have made. Just throw them out the window. You have to just go with the flow. Things are changing too quickly to think that there is something you did in January 2015, that still applies today. That was eleven months ago!

I’m kidding of course. It isn’t that different. However, some things may have changed. If you planned out each and every move you were going to make this year, chances are they didn’t all turn out as you thought they would.

That is okay, of course, because you have become nimble, you can bring in inventory on a moments notice, you can open earlier, close earlier or later, handle that call from the car, or the train station (or even from home watching your kids quietly do homework.) You want less but earn more, you are bigger and can absorb small losses in margin or you are growing faster than you thought you could and it is all you can do to keep up…ahhhh.

What you have to do is try to plan out the year, allowing for flexibility when projects finish early (rarely but possible) or late (as they happen more often) – due to unforeseen circumstances.

Of course, if you forget plans that you had for dinner with your family, the ones you made last week, you are probably in trouble. You are definitely going to have to ask for their forgiveness and figure out a way to make it up to them – plan this one out carefully – or be spontaneous and just make it happen.
