Not Sure I Know

When you say “I am not sure I know”, but you really (sort of) do, are you:

Playing dumb?

Being nice?

Thinking you have a vague recollection but don’t want to share?

We can do any of these things.

We can be certain, but not want to share.

We can be sure, but don’t want to be arrogant.

We can be pensive, but not want to reflect on that any more.

We can also just not want to get into it and “not sure I know” is a valid response to a question, especially one that is too personal and private for anyone else to ask.
