Bonnie Scotland

Ever hear of Bonnie Scotland? Until today, I would have thought it meant something about how pretty the country is – a nickname for the most charming country. Beautiful landscapes, lush green hills, deep blue lakes and a rich history.

To be fair, it actually isn’t a topic I need to know, but once a year, I try and learn something new.

So, you may know this one…

How about Secretariat – ever hear of that horse?

Turns out they have the same family lineage, just going even further back. Way back. 1850s back. And all the way to England before he was transferred to the USA for stud services.

Funny how people documented this, but some people can’t find their own family. Turns out, in a case like this, the horse breeder had to track lineage because money was (and still is) very much on the line.

Today, we want to know who we are and where we came from because it is fun to think about all of those places and people from the past. Learn from them, what they did and what they may have hoped to achieve by traveling far from home to make a better life.

Some of them, in your family, may even have come from that area of world. You may even have true ancestors from “Bonnie Scotland” – not the horse of course – which was also quite amazing, but the tiny northern part of Great Britain. If you do, you too have a rich and wonderful history. Take some time to learn more about it and teach the kids. It should be traced and shared with the kids so they can tell their kids one day.
