Imagine if a 5 second penalty was actually administered when someone on the highway cut you off. They would have to pull off the road, and just wait before heading out again.

Human nature, being what it is, they would probably do everything they could to catch up again, right?

Think about what happens when someone cuts you off on the highway. How do you react?

• Slow down and let them go.
• Just do what you were doing – thinking they’re crazy.
• Keep up with them and show them you weren’t going slow.
• Try with every possibility to pass them and take the lead again.

It would likely be one of those.

No doubt, the professionals opt for number four, with maybe a bit of the “they’re crazy” in number two.

It may seem like a lot when the difference may only be a couple of seconds, but for some, a 5 second penalty is just going to add fuel to the fire and spur even more aggressive behavior. Luckily, not everyone chooses one of the latter – even though you might not blame them.
