Sometimes, in life it is okay to take a pause, maybe a step back, but you can’t just back up or turn around whenever things go south.

(No offense to the southern states…they have nothing to do with this – that was just an expression.)

• You have to tell people what is happening.
• Ask them for help.
• Employ whatever assistance is available.
• Don’t just bail and give up.
• Overcommunicate.
• Have care for others, as well as yourself.

People who work in a kitchen know this. My kids (of whom, only one has been in that situation) say “behind” whenever they know there is risk. They make their presence known. Here I am. Take care…of you and of me.

No reason to ignore that someone might just back up…announce yourself. Prepare to pause, and share where you are. Now, others are aware and can adjust accordingly. It isn’t just for food service. This is best practice though, and while it can definitely can save from someone getting burned by hot coffee, it also works to prevent a fender bender, eliminate traffic, and generally keep things moving well in the universe.
