Knowledge is Good…

Knowledge is good, even if it is something you may not have wanted to know.

Last night, I took a CPR class – so yes, this post is going the “health and medical” route today. I promise it won’t be too graphic, but I learned things. Things that I never wanted to think about, maybe ever.

So, it still follows my theme of thoughts…

I don’t want to think that after 35 chances are you will have cracked ribs after receiving CPR. Why, because our bones are strongest at about age 30. Then… not so much. Since when did 35 become old? Isn’t 30 the new 20 and 50 the new 40?

Sure, that is what you have come to think.

While the class we took was sponsored by our youth soccer club – thank you LNUSC for getting the grant from the Red Cross – we also learned that most of the time CPR will not be used on children. Well, thank goodness – but “for the children” is really why we had signed up. To be prepared. Just in case. No, we don’t want to think about the worst, but to be prepared is a good thing.

So if not the children, then who will need CPR?  Yup, you guessed it. Those of us over 35… More often than not, the person who will need CPR will be the coach, referee or a parent. Why? Because we are older and even though we know we should take care of ourselves, we don’t.  We don’t exercise enough. We eat the wrong foods. We let stress get to us. We don’t get enough rest. We do things that we know we shouldn’t but we THINK we will be ok. Thinking isn’t enough.

So, what am I going to do with this new knowledge? Well, I am going to continue to remind myself that anything I can do to help stay healthier requires more than just thoughts. It requires action. Get up, move and get out. Don’t let the crazy thoughts overcome you and cause more stress – we have kids, we have clients or we have jobs with a boss. They will all generate enough stress for us – we don’t have to create it for ourselves.

What else? Calcium. Take it. Yes, you men out there, too.

Keep learning. Even if you don’t really want to know the truths. Knowledge is good, but what you do with it, now that’s even better.
