Familiar

The spaces around us become familiar and when they do, we tend to ignore the things we know are there and/or don’t want to see.

It could be the signs in the store that promote the same thing that’s been on sale for months.

Or, maybe it is the small things not visible at 35 miles per hour driving down the street – like broken glass or litter – and make you wonder why it’s there when you’re walking on the sidewalk.

Perhaps it is the pile of papers in the corner that still have to be filed or shredded, have they really been there since last year?

The problem arrises when the familiar becomes complacency and no one cares anymore. I couldn’t help being in a new city and seeing – what may seem ironic in a picture – is actually sad in reality.
